The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders football team had a hard-fought battle against a strong #5 ranked AAA opponent, Frederica Academy from St. Simons, on Friday at home last week. RTCA played tough, but fell to the Knights, 28-12.

The Crusader defense was the star of the contest with several big stops for losses and a great performance from the D-Line. Led by seniors Blake Durden, Alijah Hodges, and Issac Holton, the Crusaders are showing they have what it takes to hang with any opponent.

Unfortunately, some mistakes were made and the Knights were able to capitalize securing points at crucial times. The score at halftime was 7-0 Knights and the fans had to be pleased with a great competitive game of football.

The Knights then came out hungry and scored a quick touchdown off the opening kickoff. However, the Crusaders quickly rallied and Senior Hayden Meeks returned the next kickoff down to the 8 yard line. Just a couple of plays later, quarterback Drew Edwards found Meeks, connecting on the touchdown pass. That closed the lead to 14- 6.

Frederica secured another touchdown early in the 4th, but the Crusaders quickly responded with another great passing touchdown from Edwards to Blake Durden closing the score to 2112.

Battling back and forth at midfield, the Crusaders were fighting the clock pulling out all the stops as they attempted to score again late in the game. Reluctantly, the Knights did a good job controlling the clock, eating up time and ultimately punching in one more touchdown with less than a minute left to play in the game, making the final score, 28-12, Frederica.

Though the Crusaders did not get the victory they were hoping for on Friday night, they did take the time to recognize members of their community and RT family who have battled or are battling cancer. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Crusaders decided to embrace a slightly different approach with a Bleed Blue, Think Pink stand against all cancer. With several close members of the RT family battling cancer over the past few years, the team challenged the student body to stand up, be #strongeRTogether, and fight this horrible disease. As the Knights entered McLendon Field on Friday night, they were welcomed by a sea of pink! All Crusader teams will wear Pink for the entire month of October as a pledge and stance that no one is alone.

This week RTCA will travel to Damascus to take on Southwest Georgia Academy on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
