The Toombs County High School Bulldogs football team leaned on their trademark “Red Bullet” defense and a dominant ground game Friday night, pulling away late to defeat Tattnall County 28-6. The victory lifts Toombs to 5-1 on the season as they prepare to open Region play against undefeated Swainsboro this week.

The first half was a defensive slugfest. Tattnall County struck first with a 31-yard field goal late in the second quarter, taking a brief 3-0 lead. On the very next possession, Bulldog senior Justin Powell broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run to swing momentum back in Toombs’ favor.

But the Warriors answered with another field goal just before halftime, cutting the deficit to 7-6 at the break.

Both defenses held firm through a scoreless third quarter, but the Bulldogs broke the game wide open in the final period. Senior Alex Scott ignited the surge with a 35-yard touchdown run early in the fourth. Powell, who finished with 178 rushing yards on just 12 carries and 2 scores, added his second touchdown of the night, while junior Donterrius Mincey capped the offensive flurry with a late touchdown run to seal the 28-6 victory.

Behind an offensive line that paved the way for more than 300 rushing yards, Toombs County’s physicality wore down the Warriors in the second half. The defense, meanwhile, stifled Tattnall County throughout the night, allowing just 2 field goals.

Now ranked No. 2 in Class A Division I, the Bulldogs will face their toughest challenge yet when they travel to Swainsboro to take on the No. 6-ranked Tigers (6-0) in a crucial Region opener. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., and Bulldog fans are encouraged to “pack the stands” and bring the noise.
