The Lady Barons volleyball team dropped three matches last week. They started off the week against Savannah State, fell at home to Blue Mountain, and then lost to Tennessee Southern at home. vs. Savannah State
In a tense regular-season volleyball match at Gillis Gymnasium on September 23, the Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons were defeated by the Savannah State University Tigers with a final score of 3 sets to 1. The Barons showcased determination and hustle throughout the game.
The match opened strongly for the Barons, winning the first set 25-19. However, momentum shifted as the Tigers claimed the second set 25-19. The third set saw a tight competition, pushing both teams to extended points, ending in Savannah's favor at 2826. The Tigers then cemented their victory by winning the fourth set 2518.
Notable performances included Adriana de Jesus, who led with a total of 16 kills and contributed defensively with one block and six digs. Raphaela Felisberto also stood tallying 34 assists and leading in service aces with four. Amme Mobley supported the effort with nine kills, one block, and three aces, showing her versatility on the court.
The coach of the Barons, Obed Quiles, reflected on the match, stating, 'We did a better job today. We showed some really good things. We need to be better about closing out sets.' This sentiment captures the team's spirit and determination to improve as they move forward in the season. vs. Blue Mountain
The Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons fought valiantly but came up short against Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers at Gillis Gymnasium on September 26. The conference match concluded with the Barons dropping the match in straight sets, 0-3.
The Barons struggled throughout the sets, concluding the first set at 1825, followed by a consistent pattern in the next two sets, ending both at 20-25. This result extends the Barons' challenging season, bringing their current record to 2-11 and 0-6 in conference play.
Key performances came from Taylor Lamontagne, leading the team with seven kills and nine digs and adding an ace to her stats. Amme Mobley and Na'Chelle Thomas also made significant contributions, with six and four kills, respectively. In terms of defense, Raphaela Felisberto was central, providing not only one block and one ace but also leading in assists with 19. Alana Garcia showcased her all-around capabilities by contributing two aces and the highest digs at 10.
After the match, Head Coach Obed Quiles reflected on the team's performance, emphasizing the need for avoiding unforced errors, 'We can't keep giving our opponents extra chances. We keep making unforced errors offensively, and we need to be better,' vs. Tennessee Southern
In a pivotal conference match in Gillis Gymnasium, the Brewton-Parker Christian University Barons faced off against the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks on September 27. Despite moments of strong play and a closely contested second set, the Barons fell short, dropping the game to the Firehawks with a final score of 3-1.
The opening set saw the Barons lose 22-25, starting the match on the back foot. The team, however, rallied brilliantly in the second set to secure a 26-24 victory, which was highlighted by intense rallies and crucial plays that showcased their skill. Despite this momentum, the third and fourth sets were challenging for the Barons as they were defeated 13-25 and 20-25, respectively.
Key player performances were notable throughout the match. Adriana De Jesus led the team with 12 kills, followed by Taylor Lamontagne with 11 kills and eight digs, solidifying her all-around contribution. Amme Mobley also stood out, contributing nine kills. On the defensive front, blocks were scarce, with Ryann Prince and Raphaela Felisberto each registering a block. Felisberto tallied 35 assists and three aces, continuing to set up her teammates with scoring chances.
Reflecting on the match, Head Coach Obed Quiles expressed concerns about the team's consistency. ' We keep making unforced errors. We need to pay more attention to details. We had a good offensive game until the last set. We need to be disciplined with our movements,' remarked Coach Quiles.
Looking ahead, the Barons will face off against Point University in West Point, Ga., on October 4, as they seek to improve their current record of 2-12 and 0-7 in conference play.
