The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders football team faced a familiar foe on Friday night, falling 20-0 to the Edmund Burke Academy Spartans in a highly anticipated rematch of last year's GIAA State Championship Game.

While the stakes weren't quite as high in this regular-season contest, the intensity was palpable as the two powerhouse programs squared off. The Crusaders, on the road and looking to avenge their narrow 20-17 loss in the state final, were on the Eagles' 22-yard line. This turnover led to the Trojans' first score, a 5-yard touchdown run, putting them up 6-0.

Johnson County continued to capitalize on Eagle miscues. After an interception, the Trojans extended their lead to 13-0 with a 19-yard touchdown run. The lead grew even larger when their quarterback connected with a receiver for a 62-yard touchdown pass, and a subsequent Eagle fumble on the kickoff was returned for a touchdown, making the score to 25-0.

Before the half, the Trojans connected on a unable to find their rhythm on offense against a stingy Spartans defense.

The Spartans' defense proved to be the story of the night, shutting down the Crusader offense at every turn. RTCA struggled to move the ball effectively and was unable to punch it in for a score, ultimately getting blanked on the scoreboard.

Edmund Burke, riding the momentum of their State Championship victory, capitalized on their opportunities and found the end zone three times to secure the victory. The win moves the Spartans to 2-0 long touchdown pass, a 68yard reception, making the score 32-0 heading into halftime. The second half saw a running clock, but Johnson County wasn't done yet, scoring on a 46yard run in the third quarter to increase the lead to 38-0.

The Eagles' only touchdown came late in the game on a 54-yard run.

The Eagles will look to bounce back from the loss as they hit the road again this week. They will travel to Pearson to take on the Rebels of Atkinson County. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Atkinson County High School.

on the young season, while the Crusaders drop to 0-2.

While the loss is undoubtedly tough to take, especially against a rival that ended their season last year, the Crusaders have a chance to regroup and get back on track.

This rivalry has been a competitive one in recent years, and while the outcome was one-sided on Friday, the Crusaders will surely be looking forward to a chance to prove themselves again later in the season.

This week RTCA will host Thomas Jefferson Academy at 7:30 p.m.
