Lady Bulldogs Fall To Rival Vidalia
The Toombs County High School Lady Bulldogs softball team got the bats going against Vidalia High School last week, but it wasn’t enough as they fell 16-9 to the Lady Indians last Tuesday at home.
Toombs County’s bats were hot from the start, with the team getting on the scoreboard in the first inning after a run-scoring single from Taylor Bland.
VHS broke the game open, though, in the top of the fourth inning as they plated 8 runs to jump out to an 8-1 lead over Toombs. Toombs responded with a 5-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth. TCHS loaded up the bases, and a walk to Kylah Gay brought in the first run. Londyn Johnson drove in a run, and Elly Haygood added a 2-RBI single. Emerson Powell also came through with an RBI single as Toombs closed the lead to 8-6.
The Indians answered with 4 more runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 13-6. Toombs came back with three more in the bottom of the sixth to close the lead to 13-9, but VHS plated two more in the seventh on the way to a 16-9 victory over Toombs.
The Toombs County offense was a team effort, accumulating 11 hits in the contest. Leading the charge was Emerson Powell, who had a standout performance with 3 hits in four at-bats. Powell came up big in key moments, with singles in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, and she also drove in 2 runs. Other key contributors at the plate included Taylor Bland and Natalie Quintero, who both collected multiple hits. Cyleigh Ennis also contributed with two RBIs.
Despite the strong offensive showing, the Lady Bulldogs struggled to contain Vidalia's potent lineup. Taylor Bland took the loss on the mound, surrendering 13 runs (7 earned) over five innings, while striking out four and walking nine. The loss brings Toombs County's record to 2-4 on the season, and 0-1 in Region play.
Toombs had games scheduled last week against Savannah Christian and Calvary Day, but those were postponed due to weather. They faced off with the Lady Tigers of Swainsboro on Tuesday of this week after press time. They will be back in action on Wednesday at Camden County at 6:00 p.m.
