We Get

To: William Ledford From: Alan Williams

William, I just wanted to congratulate your writer, Amber Nagle, on her excellent article that was published in the recent edition of The Advance. The treatment of the Cherokees by white settlers, and by the US Government, in the early 19th Century rivals slavery as far as evil and greed are concerned. The US Supreme Court sided with the Cherokees, but President Jackson refused to enforce the verdict, and instead forced the Cherokees out of both Georgia and North Carolina. The Trail of Tears left thousands dead, and like slavery, left an indelible stain on the history and ideals of our republic. The Cherokee were an intelligent and friendly people and our ancestors turned on them without mercy. The main part of the tribe was sent to Oklahoma, where they still reside today. A small number hid in caves in NC while their neighbors and relatives were rounded-up like cattle. Those that avoided capture stayed in North Carolina and settled in the area around what is now known as Cherokee, becoming known as the Eastern Cherokee Tribe. Today they operate numerous Tourist oriented businesses, including the Harrah’s Resort and Casino. Somewhat ironic for a proud people that lived in harmony with God’s creation for over 12,000 years.

Thank you for your commitment to objective and honest journalism. My brother Dick, who has strong ties to Vidalia, says that The Advance is the best newspaper in Georgia…I think that he is right! Godspeed, Alan Williams
