KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Since 1954, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has been challenging coaches and athletes to use the powerful platform of sport to reach their peers with the life-changing power of Jesus Christ.

For 20 years, star soccer player Aubrey Kingsbury has personified this dynamic approach to ministry.

Rick Isaiah, FCA Chief Field Officer, shared, “Aubrey Kingsbury is an extraordinary advocate for FCA’s vision: to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. Throughout her many years of competition, she has remained an enthusiastic ambassador for Christ, both on and off the field.”

Kingsbury first encountered FCA in middle school and was baptized at the age of 13. After graduating from high school, she attended Wake Forest University, where she became a three-time All-American and helped lead the school’s Demon Deacons team to their first NCAA College Cup appearance.

It was during this season of life that her faith truly took root. Through her involvement with Athletes in Action and a transformative experience at AIA’s Ultimate Training Camp before her junior year, Kingsbury began to reconsider what informed her identity and values.

Kingsbury recalled, “That camp was a big springboard to strip my identity away from my performance in sports and achievements and accolades and just rest on Christ and all that He’s done for me.”

In 2015, Kingsbury entered the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), joining the Sky Blue FC (now Gotham FC) before being selected by the Orlando Pride in the 2016 expansion draft. After two seasons in Orlando, she was traded to the Washington Spirit in 2018 — a move that would mark a significant chapter both professionally and spiritually.

Shortly after her arrival in Washington, Kingsbury connected with Patricia Hollowell, FCA Director at the University of Maryland. Their partnership helped establish regular chaplain support for the Spirit. Today, every NWSL team has access to a chaplain. Kingsbury serves as the player liaison for the Spirit, helping coordinate weekly meetings and fostering connections with chaplains across the league.

“Aubrey shows how you can live out your faith,” Hollowell shared. “Just watching someone truly walk what she talks is really, really cool.”

Kingsbury was also scoring victories on the field. She played a pivotal role in leading the Spirit to their first NWSL Championship, earning her second NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year award and MVP honors in the title match.

Now 33, Kingsbury remains one of the league’s top goalkeepers. She started all 26 regular- season matches in 2024, recording 74 saves and maintaining a 1.08 goals-against average.

Yet despite the numerous accolades and accomplishments, Kingsbury says she always keeps her eyes on the ultimate goal.

“Soccer is my mission field,” acknowledged Kingsbury. “I’ve had teammates from all over the world and just some really cool experiences. So yeah, I’m still here. I never would’ve thought I would be playing into my thirties, but I’m really loving it. I know this is where the Lord has me, at least for now.

“It’s very easy for me to see that throughout my life, the things that I’ve gotten to do and accomplish have nothing to do with me. It’s very evident that God gets the glory, and it was all His doing.”

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ vision is to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. Its mission is to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. FCA’s guiding values are integrity, serving, teamwork and excellence.

Since 1954, FCA has used the powerful medium of sports and building relationships to reach the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is cultivating Christian principles by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same so that lives are changed for current and future generations.
