Avery Attends FBI Georgia Youth Academy

Asa Avery, daughter of Abby McAllister and Perry Avery, was one of twenty-five students to attend the annual Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Academy Georgia Youth Leadership Academy, which was held on July 14 through July 18.
This academy is held at Georgia Military College in Milledgeille, and is a week-long program led by the Georgia chapter of the FBI National Academy. The Academy aims to help build leadership skills in high school students, and works to help prepare them for their futures.
Avery found out about the continued from page
opportunity to attend the Academy through her father’s friends, Rusty and Eve Rodgers, whose daughter, Rilyn, had attended the camp. She applied to the Academy, and was ultimately sponsored by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
“I was extremely excited for the camp and honored to be able to attend; however, I was nervous about having to stay with someone I didn’t know in a dorm room. This was the first time I had ever gone to a camp completely on my own, not knowing anyone. Once I got settled into my dorm and met everyone I was fine and excited about the week ahead,” she explained.
Avery spent the week cultivating her leadership skills, as she said she received numerous tips for succeeding at college and the remainder of high school. She also learned several survival skills, such as what to do if there was an active shooter, how to use a tourniquet, and what to do if a tourniquet was not available. “My absolute favorite part of camp was listening to one of our guest speakers who was a retired secret service man,” she remarked. “I also really enjoyed talking with two young field agents for the GBI.” She added, “I would highly recommend this camp to others! Whether you want to be in law enforcement or not, it is a wonderful and exciting experience that will help you in life and becoming a good leader. I made some life long friendships at camp and learned very valuable information. I feel much more prepared for life challenges after attending this program, and I am extremely thankful for the opportunity!”
Avery is a rising sophomore at Trinity Christian School, and hopes to have an internship with the FBI or GBI while attending college.
