Lyons 12U Girls Take 2nd In District

The Lyons and Vidalia 12U softball teams were in Emanuel County last week for the GRPA District 1 Softball Tournament. Lyons came away with second place, while Vidalia took third. LRD vs. Effingham Co.

Lyons' first game of the tournament was against Effingham County, and LRD ran away with the win. It took Lyons just two innings to take the win by the run rule. Lyons took the lead in the top of the first inning with five RBI singles. They also added in a couple of errors from Effingham and walks as they quickly built up a 9-0 lead.

Lyons added to that total in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, a walk scored a run for Lyons, and that was followed by an RBI on a groundout. Lyons next had an RBI single that scored two more and a wild pitch that brought in another run to make it 14-0. Two more RBI singles and then a tworun double pushed the lead to 18-0. One more single and then a walk with the bases loaded capped off the game at 20-0.

LRD vs. Thomson McDuffie Up next for Lyons was Thomson-McDuffie in the second round. Lyons again ran away with the win. The bats were again hot as LRD had nine RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning. That gave Lyons a 12-0 lead. Lyons added five more runs in the second inning to push that lead to 17-0.

Lyons held in the top of the third inning to win the game by the run rule, 17-0.

VRD vs. Emanuel Co.

Vidalia had a bye in the first round and faced off with Emanuel County in the second round. It was a tough game for VRD as Emanuel pulled away to a win.

Neither team scored in the first inning, but in the top of the second, Emanuel jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Vidalia. VRD plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to close the lead to 6-3, but two more from Emanuel in the top of the third inning gave them an 8-3 lead.

VRD answered with two in the bottom of the third inning, but Emanuel came back with six more in the top of the fourth inning and then three more in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 17-5. Emanuel took the win by that score. VRD vs. Effingham Co.

The loss sent Vidalia into the losers’ bracket where they would have to fight for a chance to get to the title game. Up first for VRD was Effingham County. This was an easy win for VRD.

Vidalia jumped out with four runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead, and then blew the game open in the second with 11 more runs. With the bases loaded, a couple of walks brought in runs and then a flurry of RBI hits extended that lead to 15-0.

Vidalia added one more run in the top of the third inning on the way to a 16-0, run rule win.

VRD vs. Thomson McDuffie It was another easy win for VRD as they faced off with Thomson-McDuffie in the next round. Vidalia did all of their scoring in the top of the first inning. Thomson added seven errors to a host of hits and walks from Vidalia as the girls from VRD posted 20 runs before the inning was over.

Vidalia held in the bottom of the first and in the second inning to take the win by the run rule, 20-0.

LRD vs. Emanuel Co.

In the semifinals of the winners’ bracket, Lyons took on Emanuel County. Lyons had to fight, but they came away with a one-run victory to advance to the Championship Game.

Lyons came away with an 8-7 win over Emanuel County to head into the Championship Game as the undefeated team.

VRD vs. Emanuel Co.

In the semifinals of the losers’ bracket, Vidalia had to face a tough Emanuel County team for a shot at the title game, but it was not to be. Vidalia out-hit Emanuel 11-6, but they also committed six errors in the game which helped Emanuel take the win.

Emanuel picked up two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Vidalia closed the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third inning, but Emanuel answered in the bottom of the inning with three more runs to extend their lead to 5-1.

Vidalia added a run in the fifth inning, but four more from Emanuel pushed the lead to 9-2. In the top of the sixth and final inning, Vidalia gave it their all as they plated three more runs, but it was not enough as they fell to Emanuel County, 9-5.

LRD vs. Emanuel Championship Game 1 Emanuel County got revenge on Lyons in the Championship with a win in the first game to force a second and deciding game.

Emanuel took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning and added five more in the third as they built up a big, 7-0, lead. Lyons picked up a run in the bottom of the third inning, but two more from Emanuel in the top of the fourth inning made the score 9-1.

Lyons plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that was all they could muster as Emanuel took the win, 9-3.

Game 2

In the second game, Lyons battled, but they could not get the win over Emanuel County. Lyons took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning with two runs on a pair of RBI singles, but Emanuel answered in the top of the second inning with three runs of their own to jump into the lead, 3-2.

Neither team scored a run over the next three innings, but in the top of the sixth, Emanuel added a run to extend their lead to 4-2. Lyons tried in the bottom of that final inning, but they could get just one more run as they lost the game, 4-3.

The win gave Emanuel County the Championship, with Lyons taking second place. Lyons will be hosting the GRPA State Tournament next week so they will get an automatic bye into the tournament. Because of that, Vidalia will also get to play in the tournament as they were in third place in the District Tournament.

Lyons will play their first game on Tuesday of next week at 2:00 p.m. against Wayne County. Vidalia will play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. against Moultrie.
