Alamo Council Names Interim Clerk
The Alamo City Council tackled a number of housekeeping matters during its monthly session on May 20; among them was the appointment of City Utility Clerk Dana Burkhalter to serve as interim City Clerk until the position can be advertised and interviews conducted. Burkhalter will fill the post vacated by Marie Carrillo on April 29. The City agreed to adjust Burkhalter’s salary retroactively to compensate her for the time she has already served in the
position. The Council approved a bid from Scruggs Company of Cochran for $307,956.09 to resurface portions of five city streets: North Pine, South Broad, North Jefferson, Stubbs Street, and McRae Streets. The project is being funded through the Georgia Transportation Investment Act program.

der to yield higher dividends, the Council opted to place funds from its bond and sinking fund ($267, 277.64), water and sewer savings account ($200,178.72), and general funds ($75,000) into three CDs at Wheeler County State Bank at a rate 4.85% for the next six months. The accounts will be reviewed at the end of the six month period and a decision will be made whether to continue this arrangement.
The Council also gave a nod to Floyd’s proposal to take advantage of a onetime state Local Road Assistance grant of $45,000. Floyd said the deadline for submitting the grant application is June 15 and the funds could be applied to upgrading two heavilytraveled sections of roadways within the city: specifically Stubbs to Broad Streets, which accommodates traffic bound for the Wheeler Correctional Facility, and Slayton Street, across from the Recreation Department.
Also approved, was a one-time pickup by city crews of debris (leaves and limbs) piled up by city residents following the recent storm. The City will advise city residents by letter and on its Facebook site of the date for pickup. The city will arrange for the rent of roll-off containers to collect the debris, which will be disposed of by its refuse disposal contractor, Republic Services. The one-time pickup will be funded through American Rescue Plan funds.
The Council also agreed to file a letter of intent with FIFA to collect delinquent land taxes retroactive from 2022. The GTS company will be contracted to collect the taxes. The process requires 120 days of preparation including advertising in the legal organ, prior to the sale of the property for which back taxes are due.
City Police Chief Karen Zanders reported that her officers responded to 178 calls during the month of April. The Alamo Fire Department answered 13 calls and conducted 12 hours of training and meetings during the previous month. The department also announced that the 17th annual Fourth of July celebration will be held on Saturday, June 29, in downtown Alamo.
