Mrs. Shirley Maxine Tootle Helms, age 81, of the South Thompson Community, died on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at The Oaks Bethany in Vidalia following an extended illness.

Mrs. Helms was a lifelong resident of Toombs County and retired after 40 years from Oxford Industries Vidalia. She was a member of Edmond Chapel Church of God, where she taught Sunday school. She is preceded in death by her husband, A.J. Helms; her parents, “Buster” Tootle and Alpha Denton Tootle; 1 great-grandson, Alston Page; 2 brothers, William Donnell Tootle and Gerald Monroe Tootle; and 1 son-in-law, Ron Cannady. Her family includes 1 daughter, Angie Kay Helms Cannady of South Thompson; 2 granddaughters, Nicole Cannady Page and husband Alex of the Five Points Community, and Danielle Megan Cannady of Vidalia; 4 greatgrandchildren, Tristin, Annalise, Weston, and Kaylee; 3 sisters, Shelby Tootle Williamson of Vidalia, Jean Tootle Bryant and husband “Buck” of Lyons, and Louise Tootle Hadden of Swainsboro; 2 brothers, Edward Tootle of Clinton, SC, and Darrell Tootle of Vidalia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was Tuesday afternoon, April 9, at 3:00, in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home, with Pastor Nathan Pittman officiating. Burial followed at South Thompson Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Shannon Bryant, Shane Bowen, Junior Williamson, Brad Tootle, Dustin Joiner, and Dylan Joiner.
