CONTEXT

A compilation of quotations on a variety of issues by national, state and regional writers, well-known personalities, just plain everyday people and from various publications collected by the editors of THE ADVANCE.

Quotes for our Times:

Matt Vespa, Senior Editor at Townhall. com: Why the trial date for the Trump-Stormy Daniels hush money scheme will make you do eyerolls.

The trial will begin as the presidential election cycle starts to pick up speed rapidly, and while a top candidate will be getting tons of media coverage — it’s hardly good. That’s the point. To stain Trump, anger his base, make them coalesce around him, and hope that he pushes him over the top for the Republican nomination. Democrats don’t want to win this trial. They want to use it to pour gasoline on the GOP base and make them renominate a man they beat in 2020, a person they think will be easier to defeat.

This election is going to be a long one. There isn’t enough bourbon to deal with all the lunacy emanating from this race.

Spencer Brown. managing editor for Townhall: Desperate White House briefing shows McCarthy has Biden backed into a corner.

What really happened is that McCarthy outpaced Biden's expectations and caught the White House completely off-guard. They wrongly assumed McCarthy wouldn't have leverage and would have to pass a bill that only raised the debt limit without any conditions. But McCarthy won, succeeding at passing the House GOP's debt plan, and Biden was forced to come to the table — a place where Democrats are seemingly continuing to lose as McCarthy holds his ground. Hence Jean-Pierre's scrambling to construct a narrative — however contradictory — to try saving face for President Biden.

Cal Thomas, syndicated op-ed columnist and author: For DeSantis to be president, he must convince voters he can finish what Trump started without the chaos.

Finally, DeSantis must articulate a vision for the future. While Trump continues to wrongly obsess about the last election being 'stolen' from him, DeSantis can say we should leave that behind and focus on tomorrow.

While Floridians know him well, the rest of the nation is just being introduced to him. As Will Rogers said, 'You never get a second chance to make a first impression.'

David Marcus, columnist and author: FBI whistleblowers are the real-life victims of deplorable government corruption.

Perhaps the most important result of Republicans winning the House in last year’s midterms is the ability to hold just these kinds of investigations and hearings, to let us see in flesh and blood the human beings harmed by this corruption.

But it is not enough to expose this deepstate depravity, there must be consequences, there must be action. Frankly, there must be wholesale changes in personnel and policy at the top level.

Democrats have shown that not only are they incapable of fixing this existential crisis, they won’t even acknowledge it exists. Next year, as Americans go to the polls the FBI is on the ballot, and anyone who wants a free country rather than a police state should think carefully about that before they cast a ballot.
