The Crusaders of Robert Toombs Christian Academy took part in the GIAA State A Basketball Tournament last week in the Final 4. The Lady Crusaders faced off against the #1 team in the state in LaGrange Academy. The boys went up against Monsignor Donovan’s Rams. Both the RTCA boys and girls fell in the Final 4 to end their seasons.

Girls vs. LaGrange The girls got on the board first with a basket by Ansley Akins. RTCA kept it close over the first quarter, and with just one minute on the clock, they trailed 8-6. In the second quarter with 5:20 to go, LaGrange was on top 12-9. With just over four minutes left, Akins hit a three-pointer to make it 14-13 with RTCA down by just one. RTCA stuck with the top ranked team and trailed by just two at halftime, 17-15.

Early in the second half the Lady Crusaders took an 18-17 lead on a three by Kylie Acosta. LaGrange went back on top, but a basket by Meredith Durden put RTCA back in front 20-19, and Bree Wimberly added a basket for a 22-19 lead with 5:15 left in thethird.Bythe endofthe third quarter the Crusaders held a 3125 lead.

In the fourth LaGrange went on a run and took a 33-31 lead over RTCA. Wimberly tied the game at 33-33, and Akins made it 36-33 with just over five minutes to play in the game. LaGrange tied the game at 36-36, but Wimberly gave RTCA the lead back with four minutes on the clock. With 2:45 to play it was tied at 38-38.

LaGrange took a 39-38 lead, but a three by Wimberly put RTCA back in front, 41-39, with 2:15 to go. It was tied at 41-41 with 1:45 to play. RTCA went back on top, 44-43, but LaGrange made it 45-44 with just 20 seconds remaining.

A pair of free throws by LaGrange made it 47-44 with just seven seconds remaining. Wimberly got a free throw, but LaGrange held on to take the win, 50-45, with a few late free throws.

Boys vs. MonDon

In the boys game against the Rams, it was all MonDon in the first half of play. They pulled ahead and were on top 31-18 at he end of the first half. In the second half Drew Vaughn got a threepointer to close it to 3521. Powell got a shot to go late in the third as Mon-Don was on top, 37-23. With just 40 seconds to go in the third the score was 41-27.

In the fourth it was 53-32 as the Rams were in control of the game. With one minute left the score was 53-37, and the Rams went on to win the game 57-43 to end the Crusaders season.

RTCA finished the season with a 15-13 record, losing in the Final 4 of the playoffs.
