had resided in Montgomery County since 1988. He was active as a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, the Vidalia Masonic Lodge #302, the Quint Shrine in Savannah, and the Mt. Vernon Bank Board of Directors. He served in the United States Air Force in his youth and worked at Oxford in Vidalia for many years.

Sumner was also a past business owner, as he owned and operated S & A Laundry and Vernon & Ann’s Convenience store in Vidalia. He enjoyed farming and spent a lot of time working with cattle and hay.

Current Mount Vernon Bank Board of Directors Member G.M. Joiner stated his admiration for Sumner. “Mr. Vernon was a consummate example of a Christian country gentleman. He will be dearly missed by many.”

Leland Adams spoke on behalf of the Montgomery County Commissioners to share their sentiments on Sumner’s death. “The Commissioners and I express our deepest sympathies to Mr. Vernon Sumner’s wife, Ann, and his family on his passing,” Adams commented. “Mr. Sumner was a faithful servant to Montgomery County. He served on the Board of Tax Assessors and two terms as a County Commissioner. He also served the County Commission as Chairman. Mr. Sumner was a business leader in our community, as well. “

He concluded, “Mr. Sumner will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

In addition to his wife of 48 years, Ann Frost Sumner, Sumner is survived by thee children, five grandchildren, and 11 greatgrandchildren. The funeral was held Wednesday with burial with military honors at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
