Mrs. Celia Fountain Gillis, age ….

Mrs. Celia Fountain Gillis, age 81, of Mt. Vernon, died Monday, November 29, 2021, at the Community Hospice House in Vidalia after an extended illness. She was a lifelong resident of Mt. Vernon, and she was a 1958 graduate of Montgomery County High School. She retired as a social worker after twenty-nine years from Montgomery County Department of Family and Children Services. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was always involved with Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, fishing, spending time with family and friends and going on vacations with her family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Monroe E. Fountain and Annie Walters Fountain; and seven siblings, J.M. Fountain, Juanita F. Henry, LeRoy Fountain, Marvin Fountain, Oreta F. Avery, Bernard Fountain, and Festus Fountain. Her family includes her husband of sixty-three years, Garland Gillis of Mt. Vernon; three children, Julie A. Gillis and Randy Moore of Swainsboro, Kathy G. Braddy and husband Byron of Mt. Vernon, and Greg Gillis and Jan Lumley of Dublin; one sister, Wylene F. Denney of Canton; four grandchildren, Michael S. McNeal and wife Pam of Green Cove Springs, Florida, Jeffrey F. McNeal and wife Julie of Vidalia, LeAnn B. Fernandez and husband Jared of Falkville, and Emily G. Sammons and husband Benji of Soperton; five great-grandchildren, a great-grandchild to be born soon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside funeral service was Thursday, December 2, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Karl Hay and Reverend John Daughtrey officiating.

Pallbearers were Dennis Denney, Michael Mc-Neal, Jared Fernandez, Byron Fountain, Joey Fountain, Benji Sammons, Freddie Henry and Jeffrey McNeal.
