East Laurens Ends Toombs’ Season

The Toombs County High School football team's season came to a bit of an unexpected end on Friday of last week as they fell to the Falcons of East Laurens high school on a rainy night in The Pit. The Bulldogs struggled to get the offense going as they had several turnovers on the night. The loss knocked the Bulldogs out of the State Playoffs.

In the first period the two teams exchanged several punts. At one point TCHS got a forced fumble from Tank Morris with Lagonza Hayward recovering at the Falcons' 37-yard line. But Toombs was held and had to punt the ball away with just under two minutes continued from page

to go in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Bulldogs got on the board as Cam Robinson broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run to put Toombs on top. Jesus Mata added the extra point for a 7-0 Toombs lead.

Toombs had another chance late in the half as Hayward came up with an interception with just over a minute to go. He returned it to the Falcons' 24-yard line to set up the Bulldogs with great field position. But the offense couldn't get going and did not get in before the clock ran out.

With 6:15 to go in the third quarter the Falcons had a 33-yard run on a fourth down play that got them into the end zone. They added the extra point to tie the game at 7- 7.

East Laurens then recovered an onside kick and began to move the ball again. They had it down to the 21-yard line, and then had a run down to the 7-yard line. Toombs did hold and forced a 25yard field goal. A false start on the Falcons pushed them back five yards, but their kicker drilled the 30-yard attempt to give them a 10-7 lead over TCHS with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

Toombs was still down with 4:02 on the clock as they forced a punt by the Falcons. Toombs started their next drive at their 37-yard line. With just over two minutes left Toombs had a fourth down, and Robinson broke several tackles to pick up the first down. Robinson then got all the way to the 5-yard line to set up a first-and-goal. Morris took it in for the touchdown, but a flag was down for holding against the Bulldogs. That moved Toombs back to the 15yard line. Toombs ended up having to try for a 30yard field goal, but the ball sailed wide left giving the Falcons the ball with just a minute to go. East Laurens ran out the clock and took the 10-7 win over the Bulldogs.

The loss ended the Toombs season with a record of 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the Region.
