Homecoming At RTCA

Robert Toombs Christian Academy hosted the Lions of St. Andrews last Friday night for Homecoming. The Crusaders kept it close but fell by one score to the AAA team.

During halftime of the game the Crusaders crowned their Homecoming Queen and Princess. The 2021 Homecoming Queen was senior Ellie Graham. Senior Madison Williams was named 2021 Homecoming Princess.

RTCA had the ball to start the game. They started at their own 20yard line after a touchback on the opening kickoff. A penalty moved RTCA out to the 35-yard line. But they turned the ball over on downs at their 43-yard line with just over nine minutes to go in the first quarter.

Just a few plays later the Lions broke free for 27 yards and a touchdown. They added the extra point to lead 7-0 with 6:50 left in the opening quarter.

The ensuing kickoff went off an RTCA player and the Lions recovered it at the 45-yard line. They quickly worked the ball down to the 25 before a penalty on the Crusaders put them at the 17-yard line. With 3:43 left in the first, the Lions scored for the second time. With the PAT, they were on top 14-0.

RTCA started at their 14-yard line on their next drive. They got out to near midfield before fumbling the ball, with the Lions recovering at the RTCA 47-yard line. The Lions got to the RTCA 29-yard line, but a loss and a big penalty pushed them all the way back out to the 44-yard line. Another penalty and they were back to the 49 on the final play of the first quarter. continued from page

On the first play of the second quarter the Lions punted the ball away to RTCA with Jashawn Powell returning it out to the 22-yard line. Runs by Powell and Hunter Ennis picked up a first down. Powell took a pass from TJ Stanley out across the 40. Ennis went across midfield on a run to the 45, and then a run by Stanley got RTCA to the 35-yard line of the Lions. Stanley found Tripp Durden down to the 16-yard line, and then Tucker Heath set up RTCA at the 2 with a nice run. Heath punched it in from there with 5:10 left in the first half. RTCA went for two but did not get in and they trailed 14-6.

St. Andrews started with good field position at their 45-yard line. The RTCA defense backed them up and forced a punt. The Crusaders started at their 18-yard line after the kick.

Powell made a solid catch from Stanley out to the 43-yard line. RTCA was trying to move the ball down the field to get another score before halftime, but an interception gave the Lions the ball near midfield.

RTCA did get the ball back before the end of the half, but didn’t have enough time to get anything going, and the teams went to the locker rooms with RTCA trailing 14-6.

At the start of the second half RTCA recovered an onside kick to try to create some momentum. RTCA quickly moved the ball down the field and put it in for a touchdown. They went for the two-point conversion to tie the game up but did not get it. With that RTCA trailed 14-12 with 9:43 left in the third quarter.

St. Andrews scored on their next possession to increase their lead to 20-12 with 5:40 on the clock in the third quarter.

Powell made a nice catch on a pass from Stanley, and then a run by Powell got the Crusaders across midfield to the Lions’ 43-yard line. On the final play of the third quarter the Crusaders fumbled the ball with the Lions recovering it.

The defenses for both teams played well in the fourth quarter of the game with neither team finding the end zone again. St. Andrews did threaten as the game was winding down, but RTCA kept them out of the end zone, but fell in the contest, 20-12.

RTCA has continued to improve and has come close to getting their first win of the season. This week RTCA will be at home against Fullington Academy with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
