Bulldogs Make History With Win Over Warren Co.
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs varsity football team trailed at the break but surged behind a dominant ground game to defeat the Warren County Screaming Devils on Friday night, securing a thrilling 28-20 victory in the second round of the GHSA Class A Division II state playoffs.
While the Bulldogs faced early adversity, running back Alvin Ricks put the team on his back. Ricks was a force of nature, racking up 179 rushing yards and finding the end zone 3 times. His relentless running kept the offense moving even when the visiting Screaming Devils (6-7) built a 20-14 halftime lead that threatened Wheeler County’s perfect season.
Emerging from the locker room needing a spark, the Bulldogs' defense clamped down, shutting out Warren County in the second half. On the offensive side, quarterback Reco Wooten was efficient, finishing 5-of-7 through the air.
Late in the third quarter, Wooten connected with Jahkoryan Dinkins for a crucial 9-yard touchdown pass. Although the PAT was missed, the strike knotted the score at 20-20 heading into the final frame.
With the game hanging in the balance and just 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs turned back to their ground game. Ricks punched in the go-ahead rushing touchdown to reclaim the lead at 26-20. To ensure a cushion, the offense stayed on the field and successfully rushed for the 2-point conversion with Malik Madison punching it in, making it 28-20. The defense held firm to seal the victory.
In the win Alvin Ricks totaled 179 yards with 3 touchdowns. Wooten was 5-7 passing with a touchdown.
