Bulldogs Sweep Hornets to Open Region Play

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team made a strong statement to open their Region schedule last week, sweeping the Savannah Country Day Hornets in a three-game series. After pulling out a tense, one-run victory in the opener, the Bulldogs found their offensive rhythm, securing decisive run-rule victories in the final two games. The sweep bumps Toombs to a perfect 3-0 in Region play and 9-7 overall.
Game 1
Game one set the tone with a tight defensive battle. Ty Hutchinson went the distance for Toombs County, keeping the Hornets scoreless while giving up just three hits and striking out 13 batters.
The Bulldogs' offense struck early when Lawton Toole hit an RBI single in the top of the first inning. From there, Hutchinson and the defense carried the weight, protecting that narrow 1-0 lead all the way to the final out.
Game 2
The momentum shifted entirely to the offense in game two as Toombs cruised to an 11-1 win in five innings. The Bulldogs jumped ahead quickly in the bottom of the first. Nick Carroll brought in two runs with a single, Hutchinson drew a bases-loaded walk, and a Savannah Country Day error helped Toombs build a sudden 5-0 lead. The Hornets managed a run in the top of the second, but Toombs steadily pulled away, capping the game in the fifth with five more runs driven in by Hutchinson, Joseph Owens, and Carroll.
Game 3
By the series finale, the Bulldogs' bats were fully awake, resulting in a 17-2 win in just four innings. Toole and Hutchinson struck again in the first inning to put Toombs up 3-0. The lead grew in the second behind an RBI triple from Carroll and a bases-loaded walk from Brody Benton.
Though Country Day got on the board in the third, Toombs responded aggressively with three runs of their own, then put the game completely out of reach with a massive nine-run fourth inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple from Owens.
Stepping out of Region play this week, the Bulldogs have a busy threegame slate. The team traveled to Burke County on Monday after presstime. They return home to host Emanuel County Institute on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m., before heading to Glynn Academy on Thursday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
