Wheeler Boys Win Region

The Wheeler County High School basketball teams concluded their Region Tournament play last week. The boys captured the Region Championship, while the Lady Bulldogs secured a third-place finish.

Girls vs. Telfair Co.

It was a tough matchup for the Lady Bulldogs against the #9 ranked Lady Trojans. Telfair built a 25-10 halftime lead and pulled away to 46-22 in the third period, eventually winning 58-37.

Shiann Carey led Wheeler with 11 points, and Nikita James added 10 in the loss.

Girls vs. Dooly Co.

The team bounced back with a dominant 54-23 win in the consolation game over the Lady Bobcats.

Nikita James controlled the court with a massive 27 points. Shiann Carey added 16 points to help secure third place for Wheeler.

Boys vs. Treutlen Co.

Wheeler held a 16-10 lead by the end of the first period, extending it to 36-25 by halftime. A strong third quarter put them on top 5739, and they closed out the game with a 70-57 win.

Michael Wright Jr. led the team with 20 points. Tyree Travis scored 19, while Justin Culver and Jacorion Woodard each scored 10.

Boys vs. Wilcox Co.

A big game from Michael Wright Jr. with 29 points, propelled the Bulldogs over the Patriots in the Region Championship Game. Wheeler pulled out a close 62-55 victory to take the crown.

Reco Wooten added 14 points to the scoreboard, and Jeric Peeples scored 9 in the win.

Both squads enter the first round of the GHSA State Tournament this week. The Lady Bulldogs played Greenville on Tuesday on the road after presstime. If they win, they play again on Friday. The boys will host Trion on their home court this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
