The Montgomery County High School Eagles football team hosted the Blazers of Baconton Charter last Friday night in Mt. Vernon and rolled to a season opening win.

The Eagles kicked off the scoring with a big fumble recovery for a touchdown. Elijah McEwen came up with the ball around the 50-yard line and sprinted down the right side for an Eagle touchdown. MCHS did miss the extra point, but they were on top, 6-0, with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

The MCHS defense held on the next Blazer possession and took over at their own 29-yard line with 7:30 left on the clock.

The Eagles had a nice swing pass to Jaquez Kelly, and a personal foul was tacked onto the end of the run that moved MCHS out to the 50-yard line. Another good run by McEwen took it to the 30 of Baconton, but the Eagles stalled and were pushed back by penalties. They punted the ball away with Baconton taking over at their 10-yard line with just over five minutes left in the first quarter.

MCHS added a touchdown with just 10 seconds to play in the first quarter on a pass from McEwen to Kelly for 25 yards. Haze Thigpen added the extra point to give the Eagles a 13-0 lead.

The game then entered a lightning delay as storms moved into the area. Coming out of the lightning delay, the Eagle defense got a nice stop. The teams exchanged punts over the remainder of the first half, sending the game to halftime with MCHS up, 13-0.

Near the end of the third quarter, McEwen came up with an interception at the Baconton 35-yard line to set up the Eagles with good field position. But the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the play. And at the end of the third quarter the game went into another lightning delay.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles put together a long drive that ate a bunch of clock. But that drive stalled deep in the Blazers’ territory. After turning the ball over on downs, the Eagles got a break on a bad snap by the Blazers that went into the end zone with Kameron Henderson recovering it for a touchdown with 3:47 left to play. Thigpen added the PAT to give MCHS a 20-0 lead.

The Eagles’ defense held over the remainder of the game to take the win by that score.

This Friday MCHS will be on the road as they travel to Wrightsville to face the Trojans of Johnson County. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
