Lyons 12U Girls Take Title


The Lyons and Vidalia 12u girls’ softball teams took part in the 62nd Annual Lyons Youth Tournament recently at Partin Park with the Lyons girls taking the title.
VRD vs. Wheeler Co.
Vidalia played in the first game of the tournament against Wheeler County on Tuesday, May 27. Vidalia had no problems as they rolled to a win. VRD got on the board in the top of the second inning with a run scoring on a wild pitch, and then a second coming in on a Wheeler error. That gave Vidalia a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning a three-run triple and a grand slam helped to push the VRD lead to 10-0 over Wheeler. Vidalia then added five more in the fourth inning as they increased their lead to 15-0. VRD held in the bottom of the inning to take the win by the run rule.

Emanuel County. Emanuel took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when a run came in to score on a fielder’s choice. Neither team scored over the next two innings, but in the bottom of the fourth Emanuel added two more runs to take a 3-0 lead over Vidalia.
Emanuel scored one more in the fifth inning on the way to a 4-0 win over VRD.
LRD vs. Appling Co.
Lyons played their first game of the tournament against a tough Appling County team. It was a close game, but Lyons came out on top. The final score of the game was 5-4 with Lyons moving into the semifinals of the winners’ bracket with the win.
VRD vs. Bulloch Co.
After the loss to Emanuel moved VRD down into the losers’ bracket, they took on Bulloch County. VRD had no problems against Bulloch as they cruised to a victory.
This game was already over after the first inning as Vidalia stung together a bunch of hits along with some walks and errors on the way to 16 runs. Vidalia added four more in the second inning to win the game by the run rule, 200.
VRD vs. Appling Co.
Up next for the girls from Vidalia was Appling County. This was a close game, but Appling came out on top to end the Vidalia tournament run.
Appling picked up two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Vidalia picked up a run in the top of the second to close the lead to 2-1, but Appling scored two more in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 4-1.
Vidalia did get a run in the top of the third inning, but Appling answered in the bottom half of the frame to lead 5-2. Vidalia never quit, though, as they came through with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, but that was all they could muster as Appling took the close win, 5-4.
LRD vs. Emanuel Co.
Lyons played well against Emanuel County in the semifinals of the winners’ bracket. They earned their shot at the Championship with a big 9-3 win.
LRD vs. Emanuel Co.
Championship Emanuel County fought their way back through the losers’ bracket for a rematch with Lyons in the Championship. Lyons again was the stronger team as they came away with the win and the title.
Lyons got the scoring started with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. They added to that lead in the third inning with a pair of RBI singles, and a runner stole home. That put LRD on top 4-0.
Emanuel scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to close the lead to 4-2, but Lyons answered in the bottom half of the frame with four more runs to extend their lead to 8-2. Lyons capped off the game with two more runs in the fifth inning to win the game and the Championship, 10-2.
Lyons and Vidalia both took part in the GRPA District 1 Tournament this week in Emanuel County. The Championship Game was scheduled for Tuesday after presstime.
