Toombs Gets 1st Region Win

The Toombs County High School Bulldogs baseball team has been struggling in Region play so far this season, but they did managed to pick up their first Region win of the year last week as they won one of three games against the Red Raiders of Bacon County. TCHS is now 6-14-1 on the year, and they are 1-8 in Region play.

Game 1

The first game of the series was on Monday in Lyons. It was a low scoring game that saw six innings of scoreless baseball.

Bacon opened up the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, putting them ahead early. And that was all they needed. Toombs managed just three hits in the game, two of those by Treyvone Harris.

The Bulldogs were not able to score in the game as they fell, 2-0.

Game 2

The two teams next met in Alma on Friday for a double header. In the first game it was one big inning from Toombs that was the difference in the game. TCHS took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Harris came through with a triple and then was driven in by Brantley Upshaw to put the Bulldogs on top 1-0.

TCHS then exploded for nine runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead over Bacon. Harris again got things started, this time with a walk. That was followed by walks continued from page

to Upshaw and Wil Watts to load up the bases for the Bulldogs. An error on a ball hit by Jason Dukes scored a run, and then Dawson Brantley walked to bring in a run for a 3-0 lead. That was followed by an RBI from Jesus Quintero and then a hit by Bryson Stanley that scored two more as Toombs took a 6-0 lead.

Logan Kight followed that with a hit, and Kodie Cortez drove in another run for the Bulldogs. Then Harris and Upshaw hit back-to-back doubles as the Bulldogs went ahead 10-0.

Bacon plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning to close the lead to 10-2, and then they added two more in the fifth to make it 10-4. Bacon managed just one more run, in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Bulldogs took their first Region win, 10-5.

Lucas O'Conner got the win on the mound for the Bulldogs and went the full seven innings. Harris led the way at the plate with three hits and Upshaw added two.

Game 3

In the final game of the series and the night cap of the double header, Bacon took the win to take the series 2-1. Neither team scored over the first two innings of the game, but Bacon took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with two runs. Toombs answered in the top of the fourth inning as they jumped on top with three runs. Upshaw got it started with a solo home run over the right field fence. Watts reached on a error and that was followed by a hit by Brantley. Quintero came through with a two-RBI hit to put TCHS on top 3-2.

Bacon took the lead back in the fifth inning with four more runs as they went ahead 6-3. Toombs was not able to plate any more runs in the game as they fell by that score.

Quintero led TCHS with two RBI's. Upshaw had two hits in the game.

This week Toombs will match up with East Laurens for a Region series. The first game was at East Laurens on Tuesday after presstime. The will be in Lyons on Thursday at 5:45 p.m., and wrap things up back in East Dublin on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
