Lady Eagles Are Region Champs

The Montgomery County High School basketball teams took part in the Region 4A Tournament last week. The Lady Eagles showed why they are #1 in the state as they brought home the Region Championship with wins over Wilcox County and Dublin. The boys dropped their firstround game to Telfair County.

Boys vs. Telfair

On Tuesday of last week, the MCHS boys took on the Trojans of Telfair County. Early in the first quarter Taliek Jackson gave the Eagles an 11-9 lead with a three-pointer. In the second the Trojans went back on top and by the third quarter they were leading the Eagles 40-19. The Eagles closed it to 44-26, but by the end of the third it was 59-35. In the fourth quarter of the game, MCHS made a run to make the score 68-57, and then another three by Jackson put the Eagles down by just eight, 68-60.

But over the remainder of the fourth, the Trojans pulled away from MCHS to take the win, 82-70.

The loss ended the Eagles season with a record of 6-15.

Girls vs. Wilcox

As the #1 team in the state should do, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter of their game against the Lady Patriots of Wilcox County. MCHS led 24-8 at the end of the first, and continued from page

they had pushed that lead to 40-18 by the end of the first half.

In the third quarter MCHS went on a tear as they outscored Wilcox 25-3. That put them on top 65-21 heading to the fourth. In that final period with all the subs in, MCHS took the win, 74-25.

The Lady Eagles were led by Makyla Bell with 26 points, Marley Bell added 22 points, and Amire Banks scored 8 and added 8 assists.

Girls vs. Dublin Championship

Up next for the Lady Eagles were the Irish of Dublin in the Region 4A Championship Game which was held in Dublin.

Dublin played well on defense in the game and kept MCHS from making any big runs, but Montgomery still came out on top. MCHS was leading 10-4 at the end of the first period and pushed that lead to 24-12 by halftime. The Eagles slowly pulled away in the second half as they led 35-20 heading to the fourth and took the win, 46-26. Marley Bell led MCHS with 19 points. The win moves the Lady Eagles into the State Playoffs as the #1 seed out of Region 4. On Tuesday of this week after presstime MCHS took on Brooks County at home in the first round. Brooks is the #4 seed out of Region 2. If the Lady Eagles won that game, they will move on to face the winner of the Social Circle and Trion game. The next game would be held on Friday or Saturday of this week in Mt. Vernon.
