WANT TO BE A POLICE OFFICER? The City of Mount Vernon Police Department is seeking applicants interested in becoming a police officer with the City of Mount Vernon. Applicants can be POST Certified or not. Non certified applicants must meet pre-requisites before entering the 11 week, 408 hour Georgia Public Safety Training Center’s Basic Law Enforcement Training. Minimum requirements to enter the training are: 1. Be at least 21 years old; 2. Be a citizen of the United States; 3. Have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent; 4. Not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of any crime the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in the federal or state prison or institution nor have been convicted of enough misdemeanors to establish a pattern of disregard for the law; 5. Undergo a background investigation; 6. Successfully complete the Accuplacer, Asset, or Compass Test. This exam must be completed prior to enrolling in any Basic Law Enforcement Course. 7. Be fingerprinted for the GBI and FBI to determine the existence of a criminal record; 8. Undergo a physical examination by a licensed physician and a psychological examination by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist to determine any physical, emotional or mental conditions that may adversely affect the ability to exercise the powers or duties of a peace officer; and 9. Be interviewed by the manager of the GPSTC Regional Academy where you will attend. The salary for those who are non-POST Certified but going through the academy is $38,000 annually. The City offers great benefits, to include Life Insurance, Health Insurance, Personal Leave, Sick Leave, Retirement and Take-Home Vehicle. The salary ranges from $42,000 to $50,000 for Sworn Police Officers who are currently or previously certified in the State of Georgia in good standing with Peace Officer’s Standard and Training (POST).
